Snorkel with sharks

Caye Caulker is a pretty chill island, so honestly, if you choose to only do one organized tour, this should be it. I booked through Ragamuffin Tours, and I spent the day sailing through pristine green waters, making stops at Hol Chan, the reef, and Shark Ray Alley. In Shark Ray Alley, jump in and frolic with the very friendly nurse sharks. No worries, they eat via suction so there’s no risk of coming out missing limbs! This was honestly one of the coolest experiences of my life, and one I would definitely recommend. Make sure to bring your camera; I use the Olympus TG-4 Waterproof Camera.

Trivia Night at Barrier Reef Sports Bar & Grill

Booking my trip, in no way, shape, or form did I think I’d be doing trivia. However, trivia night at the local sports bar is a hopping occurrence! Plus, at 9:00 PM, the tables are cleared, the DJ comes out, and the whole place becomes a massive dance party. This was a huge (but amazingly fun ) surprise.

Wander the Island

Rent a bike or wander on foot and just soak in the island life. I absolutely loved the pastel colored houses!

Beach

Visit the beach off the main street. Befriend the island guys selling coconuts, or just nap in the shade of the palm trees. I brought my book one morning, and it was so incredibly peaceful.

Swings

There are a surprising amount of swings for Caye Caulker being such a small island. There were swings at beach bars; always say yes to mango margaritas on a swing. There were swings along the water. In short, always swing if you have a chance. You’re on a beautiful island, so why not?

Errolyn’s House of Fry Jacks

If you learn one thing in Belize, it should be fry jacks are life. I’m not kidding. How did I ever live without these amazing creations? Fried dough stuffed with eggs, beans, cheese, chicken, you name it…all for only about $2. And this counts as breakfast? Yes please! Sign me up every day.

Sunset

Be sure to catch a beautiful Belizean sunset. There’s nothing like watching the sun slip slowly behind the horizon after a tough day at the beach…definitely one of the best things to do in Caye Caulker.

Fran’s BBQ Grill

Plan to have dinner at Fran’s one evening on the beach. I can’t quite tell you where, because she doesn’t exactly have an address. Head to the main street, look for the “Frantastic” sign and listen for Fran calling out the daily specials. She’ll be serving up fresh seafood and chicken, along with unlimited rum punch. The Grill is not known for its speedy service…I didn’t because unlimited rum punch, duh!

The Split & Lazy Lizard

Make your way down to the Split and bask in the sunshine (with proper SPF of course!) The Lazy Lizard is always available to quench your thirst and provide plenty of entertainment.

Go Slow

This is the motto of Caye Caulker. I’m known to be a bit of a whirlwind, but I have to say I adapted quite nicely. Whether it was the rum punch or island lifestyle, remember to chill and soak in the beauty.

Logistics

Flights to Belize: I’d recommend searching through eDreams.net. They scan tons of different travel discount sites and feature special flight deals. Fly into Belize City, and catch a water taxi over to the island. Once on the island, no cars allowed! You can use one of the many golf cart taxis to get to your destination if you need. The island is so tiny though, that it’s very walkable.

Where to Stay in Caye Caulker, Belize: For the best value on the island, check out Caye Caulker Beach Hotel, which is literally one minute from the beach. Another top pick in Caye Caulker are the Seaside Villas where every unit has a balcony with ocean views. For the backpacking crowd, check out Go Slow Hostel…great vibes and you’re right by the Lazy Lizard! I personally opted to stay at a local rental. (Use my link for savings on your first stay!) since I was with a group of friends. We found one with a pool, so it ended up being our best option.

  1. I can’t wait to go swim with sharks. There are plenty in Florida though. You did a great presentation on going to Belize.

  2. Pictures of the beach are lovely, but my favourite is the white picket fence. If i had a frontyard, I would surely have a white picket fence! And your title is very creative!!

  3. One of few places in central America with English as the official language. Was it easy to communicate and get around? It is a lot about sunshine, swimming and relaxing, but Belize also got a quite interesting history as British Honduras, not to mention the history of the natives. Was there any interesting historical sight in Caye Caulker? 🙂

    1. It was very easy to communicate, somewhat easy to get around (there was no official bus schedule, so that was fun haha). I didn’t find a ton of history in Caye Caulker, but spent some time in San Ignacio and visited a cultural museum there. It walked through the history of Belize, which I knew next to nothing about, so very interesting. I’ll be posting on San Ignacio eventually so stay tuned 🙂

  4. Snorkeling with the nurse sharks looks awesome! I have seen some sharks scuba diving and they were surprisingly not as scary as I thought.
